NAME: Chakotay
RANK: Commander
ROLE: First officer, USS Voyager NCC 74656
RACE: Human (born on a Federation colony)
Chakotay was born on an outlying Federation colony near the Cardassian border in 2335.
Little is known about his early life, but when he was 15 he went to the rain forest on
earth. At the time he thought it was boring, he only went because his father pressured him
to go. Chakotay decided to leave the tribe and go to Starfleet academy. He rose to the
rank of Lieutenant-Commander, but when his father was killed in a Cardassian attack he
resigned his commission and joined the Maquis.
While in the Maquis he meet Seska, a Bajorian in 2969. The two became close friends, then
a relationship developed between the two. Chakotay finally realises that a long lasting
relationship between the two is impossible, but the two remain close friends.
When the Maquis ship is was commanding is brought to the Delta quadrant by the Caretaker
Array he is forced to put aside his differences and co-operate with the Starfleet crew. He
finds out that one of his crew members, Tuvok is in fact a Starfleet spy. Together they
locate his engineer, B'Elanna Torres and defeat the Kazon, but at the cost of his ship.
The two sets of crews are merged into one on the USS Voyager and Chakotay is made first
officer.
Chakotay is a honourable man who has strong beliefs of his ancient tribe. He believes that
his "sprit guide" guides him through life. Chakotay is a wise man and often
comes up with alternative solutions for Captain Janeway to consider. He is also realistic
in their chances of getting home, which he rates as slim. However, he knows that at the
end of the day she is the Captain. When Chakotay disagrees with Janeway's plan for an
alliance with the Borg (Scorpion, parts I+II) he makes his feelings known, but
respects Janeway's decision . However, when Janeway is injured Chakotay is forced to kill
most of the Borg when they try to access deflector control. Janeway is deeply disappointed
with Chakotay for going against her decision, but she forgives him.
Chakotay is strongly attracted to Janeway. Normally the constraints of command would not
permit such a relationship but when the two are stranded together on a planet (Resolutions)
he suggests that they may be able to become more than just friends. However, she believes
that the they will find a cure for the virus. She also is not at the point to give up her
lover, Mark. In the future there may be a point for the two to get together, even more
since Janeway found that her lover has since married another woman.
